Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ Island Competitor Teardown — The Study

What it takes to beat the sites that rank: deep profiles across four target markets plus the Ultimate Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ Island Site spec assembled from the best of each. Live SERPs captured 2026-10-06.

Method: live Google results (DataForSEO, mobile, 2026-10-06) for outdoor kitchen installation [city] in each market — top 2 real sites per city from organic (directories/forums/social excluded and noted). Phoenix and Houston returned no map pack and near-empty organic layers, so documented fallbacks from the same SERPs were profiled (Garcia's Dreamscapes from Phoenix's image block). Grill Assembly Guys is tagged lead-gen — profiled as proof of the model, not skipped. Each site profiled at source level: every page inventoried, raw HTML inspected for schema, tel: links, chat widgets, forms, call tracking, plus offers, warranties, financing and verbatim title/meta/H1 tags. Full detail lives in the four city pages.

The Five Findings That Matter

1. A lead-gen network already owns 2 of Houston's top 8 — and it sells "Get an AI Website" to contractors

Grill Assembly Guys (#2) and outdoorkitcheninstallation.com (#8) are one template network: city×service pages with one injected local sentence, quote forms wired to a lead-distribution API with TCPA consent, post-submit cross-sell into 20+ unrelated home services, Ringba dynamic numbers rotating per page (877-832-1768 / 833-906-2711 / 833-959-0443), and Google Ads tag AW-837666311. Their money pages have no <h1> and ship BreadcrumbList schema only — and a footer disclaimer that they "does not warrant or guarantee any work." The network even sells websites to the contractors it competes with. Validation of the DropSites thesis, and the bar a real local builder must clear.

2. Price transparency is the ranking mechanic — again

AE Outdoor Living publishes $8K–$15K islands → $45K–$120K full kitchens in titles, metas and FAQs — and holds Phoenix #1. Remodelit's cost guide publishes $15K–$120K tiers plus "what most clients actually spend ($35K–$60K)" — and holds Dallas #1. Texas Stone Craft puts pricing tiers + permit timelines on ~63 service×city pages. Meanwhile Outdoors Oasis, Bar-B-Clean and Grill Assembly Guys publish zero dollar figures. Every People-Also-Ask box in all four markets is a cost question. The sites that answer it with numbers rank.

3. The ranking pages aren't service pages — they're comparison guides, city templates and catalogs

Phoenix #1 is a countertop comparison guide (/compare/outdoor-kitchen-countertops-arizona), not a service page. Grillnetics ranks LA #3 with a 4-paragraph city page backed by 10 metro + 15 state pages and LocalBusiness+FAQPage schema. Bar-B-Clean runs 310 /territory/service/ URLs with genuinely differentiated copy. Texas Stone Craft's page data model (answerFirst + keyFacts + pricing tiers + FAQs → JSON-LD, backed by llms.txt) owns the Dallas long tail. Hub-and-spoke content architecture beats a prettier homepage every time in this niche.

4. The offer layer is nearly empty — membership is uncontested

Only AE Outdoor Living sells a membership (Outdoor Guardian $19/$49/$99 per month — the only one of 8). Financing exists at exactly two sites: Grillnetics (Bread) and AE (HFS Financial + Credit Union West, with an honest "AE Outdoor Living is not a lender" disclaimer). The only urgency language in the set is Outdoors Oasis' "Help is Available 24/7/365." Documented warranties: Grillnetics' Limited Lifetime page and TSC's 5-year workmanship. Everyone else's whole offer is "free estimate." In a $15K–$80K category, the monthly-payment callout and the membership plan are free real estate.

5. The execution bar is on the floor

Outdoors Oasis ships zero trust proof, a misspelled linkeden.com social link, an "Area We Serices" typo and no analytics at all. Garcia's Dreamscapes has an empty reviews page and keyword-stuffed photo filenames as its only SEO. Remodelit's homepage JSON-LD is broken and its form carries a 555-placeholder. Bar-B-Clean — Houston's #1 — has no phone number anywhere on the site. Grill Assembly Guys has no H1 on its money pages. Full schema, working forms, one tracking number and visible license numbers is a winning spec here.

SERP Landscape — What Actually Ranks

Live Google results captured 2026-10-06 (DataForSEO, mobile) for outdoor kitchen installation [city]. Two of four captures (Phoenix, Houston) returned no map pack at all — directories, social and lead-gen templates filled the page instead.

The structural read: with no map pack in half the captures, organic is the whole game in Phoenix and Houston — and in Houston two of the top eight organic slots are one lead-gen network's template. Every PAA box in all four markets asks price questions ("How much does it cost to have an outdoor kitchen installed?", "Is an outdoor kitchen worth the money?"), and the sites that publish numbers (AE, Remodelit, TSC) are the ones that rank. The related searches pull toward "Custom BBQ Island" — island-intent deserves its own page in the template.

The Ultimate Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ Island Site — Best of All 8

The target for the outdoor-kitchen drop template: AE's transparency and content machine, Grillnetics' productized offer and documented warranty, TSC's page data model, Bar-B-Clean's lifecycle funnel — with the field's execution failures excluded.

1. Site Architecture steal: AE hub-and-spoke + TSC data model + Bar-B-Clean mesh

2. Homepage Anatomy — exact order steal: Outdoors Oasis urgency + Grillnetics offer + AE transparency

  1. Announcement bar: "Help is Available 24/7/365. Call Now" + phone (Outdoors Oasis verbatim)
  2. Sticky header: logo, nav, tap-to-call, "Free Design Consultation" (Grillnetics' productized "Free outdoor kitchen Design Services")
  3. Hero: exact-match H1 + the honest price band ($8K–$15K islands → $45K–$120K kitchens) + trust chips (4 ROC/license numbers, written warranty, 5-year workmanship) + short quote form
  4. Tri-band CTA bar: Request Quote | tap-to-call | Text Us Photos
  5. Priced project gallery with keyword-laden photo filenames (Garcia's image-SEO discipline) and named neighborhoods
  6. Services grid linking every money page
  7. Offer band (see #3) incl. the membership card
  8. Live Google review widget with counts (TSC's 5.0/39 pattern)
  9. Financing card with named lender + "we are not a lender" honesty + payment estimator (AE)
  10. Comparison content teaser ("Granite vs porcelain for Arizona heat" / local variant)
  11. Named founder + team photos + license numbers verbatim
  12. FAQ block with hard numbers → FAQPage schema
  13. Service areas + suburb mesh + final CTA + true hours

3. The Offer Stack steal: AE's whole stack + Grillnetics' warranty page

4. The Trust Stack steal: AE licenses + Remodelit's named owner + Bar-B-Clean's proof wall

5. Conversion Mechanics steal: AE's brief form + Bar-B-Clean's qualified intake

6. SEO & Schema — the field's worst layer our edge

7. The Review Engine — the one thing a template can't ship

This is the recurring tier's reason to exist. The map pack runs on review volume: Elegant Kitchen Cabinets holds LA's pack slot on 73 reviews, Allied Outdoor Solutions holds Dallas's on 432 — while the organic sites show almost nothing (TSC 39, AE 18). Grillnetics at least ships a "Leave A Review" funnel. The template sets the review wall; a post-job SMS → Google review flow fills it. Same product as the HVAC study — the gap repeats in every niche.

8. Do NOT — the anti-patterns found in the field

Read the columns: the Membership column has exactly one entry (AE) — the recurring product nobody sells. Booking is a call-back form everywhere — not one site ships real scheduling. Reviews shown are near-zero across the organic set while the map pack runs on 73–432. And License shown is a single checkmark in eight rows. Membership + booking + review engine + license proof — ship those four and the template beats every site profiled.

Next Steps

  1. Feed the spec into the outdoor-kitchen drop template — the price-band hero, the /compare + /answers + /problems spokes, the page data model (answerFirst/keyFacts → JSON-LD + llms.txt), and the offer stack above are the upgrade list.
  2. Watch the lead-gen network — the AW-837666311 / Ringba / Dynamo template appears in this study AND the shed study; it is one operator scaling across home-service verticals (and selling "AI websites" to contractors). Track its spread — it is the canary for where programmatic lead-gen goes next.
  3. Price the recurring tier with the lifecycle play — grill cleaning → annual reminders (Bar-B-Clean's email-recapture model) plus the Outdoor Guardian-style membership and the review engine. Nobody in the set sells any of the three as a product.
  4. Keep the SERP snapshots — two of four captures had no map pack; re-pull before comparing across time. Related searches push "Custom BBQ Island" — island-intent pages should be first-class in the template.
